How to Light Night Exteriors with two Lights: We Are Marshall

INCLUDED IN THIS LESSON:  1 Minute Movie clip to enhance instruction     –Supplied w/English Subtitles

IN THIS LESSON YOU WILL LEARN:  In this Lesson it is all about working with less. Look at a scene, watch the blocking with the actors ebbing and flowing, figure out how the camera will best move to tell this part of the story, and then decide where the key light should go. Once this process is done, the fill light and back light can be worked out. This process is how I look at lighting for every scene. The KISS philosophy (keep it simple stupid) is always going through my head. On We Are Marshall, I challenged myself and my team to think about how we could light a major night exterior in the rain with just two lights.

  • What is the emotion that you want to convey in your lighting
  • How does the light need to reveal or hide
  • How to work with less
  • Logistics and challenging your team to deliver

Hi Shane, just a question. Are there any lights that I can stay in the rain without getting burned? The classic Arri Fresnel tungsten and the Arri HMI for example? thank you!

@Heroshot Hi Heroshot, All lights can work in the rain as long as they have Rain Hats on them. We do this all the time. See this link, love this invention https://www.robsrainhats.com/

@carlosfaria HI Carlos, The Lightning effects were done with Lightning Strikes strobe units. http://www.luminyscorp.com/index.php/lightning-strikes-2/70k-linear/, they are the most realistic that I have found.
