How to Pull Focus: Camera Assistant Series

INCLUDED IN THIS LESSON:  11:12 Minutes of instructional Video    –Supplied w/English SubTitles

IN THIS LESSON YOU WILL LEARN:  Pulling focus has become vital in today’s filmmaking projects. With moving to digital, we are moving faster and taking less time for rehearsals with actors. Pulling focus has become as much of an art as it is a technical position on set. You have to be able to learn how to feel the emotion of the scene, to become “one” with the characters, just as much as the actors do. You need to learn how to see and feel the tendencies of each actor on set, all while running the camera department, keeping your team ready and keeping  yourself organized.

In This Lesson you will learn how to practice the craft and make it your art.  This is a step by step process to help you begin your future as focus puller or to sharpen your skills and find some new techniques and tools to add to your day to day workflow.

1st AC and stealth focus puller extraordinaire Derek Edwards is that person that shapes the story on screen by controlling what the audience focuses on. Derek has mastered the art of focus pulling and has been working with Shane Hurlbut, ASC for about twenty years.

<<<Robert>>>This is very helpful for me, and I suspect all independent filmmakers. Many of us are using remote follow focus systems now and this is a great lesson on how to get everyone on the same page when it comes to telling the story with focus. Thank you.
