How to Color Correct DIY Metal Halide Fixtures
INCLUDED IN THIS LESSON: 7.5 Minutes of Instructional Video, Detailed Written Breakdown, Lighting Schematics, and side by side Comparisons for instruction
IN THIS LESSON YOU WILL LEARN: HMI’s are an expensive investment. Shane Hurlbut, ASC takes you through the process of color correcting one of his primary lighting fixtures from Terminator Salvation, the 1500 Watt Metal Halide Sports Fixture. It is called a sports fixture because these are the lights that illuminated all of the athletic fields across the world. He shows you how to turn this light into a 4K par, with all the necessary gel combo’s to function like a move light. If you are looking to add some DIY to your arsenal, this is one to check out.

Hey Shane AKA the best Cinematographer! is it a good practice using a gel on a scene that has different colors around it? and if it is yes, on which preference of color temp. i can i adjust the gel?
Shane Hurlbut, ASC 10 days ago
@Mintesinot HI Mintesinot, These lamps are close to Daylight Kelvin color temp. I was using minus green gel to fine tune the color, but with these DIY fixtures there CRI value is very low around 60+, so you do not get the full spectrum of colors
