How to Light Night with Existing Street Lights: Fathers and Daughters

INCLUDED IN THIS LESSON:  8 Minutes of Move Clips to assist Instruction, Behind-the-Scene Stills, Top Down Lighting Schematics and shooting schedule    –Supplied w/English Subtitles

IN THIS LESSON YOU WILL LEARN:  Lighting Urban Night Exterior with Street lights is what this lesson is all about along with some other Golden Nugget scenes that I breakdown for you.  Controlling street lights can be impossible sometimes, I go through the process of how I shape each one along a walk and talk.  What color temp do I set my camera at, which other lights do I use to create color contrast, what Bokeh lights can do for your scenes depth?  We breakdown how you can turn a Mini van into a camera car and how to light a scene with just a laptop.

  • Dealing with another technical disaster and what was the solution
  • What you need to transform your mini van into a camera car
  • How I shaped Street lights so the scene was not flat
  • What other lights I use to create depth and color contrast

Hi Shane, thank you for the lesson. My questions are; did you add quarter green on Celeb 200 to match with Sodium Vapour lights outside? And the second is do you normally re globed street light with higher watt ones or that is the decision is taken on set if it is necessary? Best.

@cinarunal Hi Cinarunal, No, the Celeb 200 and 400 tend to have too much magenta in them so I always add 1/4 plus green. Now the new Kino Selects have a magenta and green bias control so you can now dial to eye. I try to shape them if they are bright enough. If not I will add another sodium vapor head clamp right next to the Cobra head, I have been doing this for awhile since Crazy/Beautiful
